The LG G8 ThinQ Will Use its OLED Display as a Speaker
Slowly but surely, we’re learning more and more about LG’s upcoming flagship, the G8 ThinQ. Previously, it was announced the device would feature a 3D selfie camera for facial recognition, and we have a pretty good idea of what the phone’s gonna look like. Now, LG has confirmed another aspect of the device: the speaker situation.
According to the company’s press release, the G8 will still include a Boombox speaker on the bottom, utilizing the phone’s body as a resonance chamber for louder sound output. However, instead of using an earpiece at the top as a companion speaker, the company will use a special kind of technology to turn the phone’s OLED screen into a speaker.
Called “Crystal Sound OLED,” the technology will essentially vibrate the display in order to produce sound. It’s unclear what this is gonna sound like, but LG says it adds volume and clarity to the overall listening experience. And since the feature can be used alongside the Boombox speaker, users will finally get stereo sound output on an LG phone.
I’d also like to point out there’s a good chance this feature will replace the traditional earpiece on the G8. In Evan Blass’ renders, a hardware earpiece is indiscernible, and these are the sharpest renders of the device we’ve seen so far. Therefore, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you’ll be able to hold the top portion of the G8’s screen to your ear and hear the caller on the other line. This is just my guess, mind you, so take it with a grani of salt.
In other news, LG has also confirmed the G8 will come with DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, a hi-fi quad DAC (with a headphone jack), and MQA audio support.
“Our commitment to driving smartphone audio to new heights is on clear display in LG G8 ThinQ,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president and head of product strategy at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “By developing new technologies as well as working closely in partnership with the audio industry’s best partners, LG will continue to deliver the quality of sound that consumers demand and deserve.”
The G8 is said to come with a 6.1-inch display, a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, dual 16MP cameras, a 3,500mAh battery, and Android Pie. We’ll learn more about it when it gets unveiled later this month during MWC 2019.
