A new report out of Macotakara claims Apple isn’t finished with the iPod Touch. If you recall, the last time the company updated the device was in 2015 (the same day this website launched, actually), and since then, we haven’t heard anything in terms of future upgrades. But now, it’s being reported the company is developing a new iPod Touch, likely with modern specs and features.
Unfortunately, Macotakara doesn’t go into detail as to what the new iPod Touch might feature. If history is any indication, however, it may be safe to assume that if this new iPod reaches the market, it’ll likely come with an A11 Bionic processor from 2017, iOS 12, and a 12MP camera. It might also see a larger 4.7-inch screen, but people still like a 4-inch form factor (hence the iPhone SE) so there’s really no telling what Apple might decide to do.
Regardless if Apple makes a new iPod Touch or not, the question remains whether it would be actually worth selling. Kids nowadays already have phones, and no doubt will the iPod be geared toward younger audiences. Sure, parents who haven’t already bought their children $800 smartphones might find pleasure in spending $200 on what’s essentially a shrunken down iPad, but it may already be too late for Apple to succeed with a new generation of one of its most popular devices of the iTunes age. In other words, don’t hold
Speaking of not holding our breath, Macotakara also says Apple might switch to USB-C on the iPhone this year, but no so much as a reference design has been created just yet. This could mean Apple will stick with Lightning for at least another year on its phones, but we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out to draw any conclusions.
