Update 12-7-2018: It’s been confirmed that OnePlus won’t be the first manufacturer to introduce a smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 855. A miscommunication is to blame for the confusion. More in our follow-up article here.
Original article: Qualcomm’s holding a huge summit this week in Hawaii to announce a bunch of new stuff regarding 5G and the future of mobile processing. At the event, the company took the wraps off the Snapdragon 855 processor which will make its way into phones in 2019. As it turns out, the very first phone to ship with the chipset will be a OnePlus device.
OnePlus founder Pete Lau took to the stage today to announce the news which, surely, will stun some people. Historically, Samsung has been first to ship a phone with the new year’s flagship processor. But in this case, it looks like OnePlus will beat them to the punch.
Notably, this phone likely isn’t the OnePlus 7. Onstage, Lau also stated this upcoming phone would support 5G in the U.K. on EE, so there’s a good chance it’ll kick off a new device lineup for some sort of particular market. Details remain slim for the time being, but as we approach 2019, we expect to hear much more so stay tuned.
