Samsung’s always up to something. Whether it be developing a foldable smartphone or working on a less-than-stellar competitor to the Google Assistant (*cough* Bixby *cough*), it seems the company’s always working on something that will make headlines. This time around, it looks like the Korean giant’s cooking up what appears to be a pretty drastic upgrade to its Galaxy S smartphone.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Samsung is allegedly working on a new phone currently known as the “Beyond X.” The Beyond X will reportedly serve as Samsung’s 10th-anniversary device, similar to how the iPhone X marked 10 years since Apple’s first smartphone started shipping. And much like the iPhone, the Beyond X will make some significant improvements.
For starters, the phone will reportedly ship with a massive 6.7-inch display, 0.3-inches larger than the Galaxy Note 9’s. It’s unclear what the resolution or aspect ratio may be for the phone, but I would bank on something above Quad HD and around 19.5:9, respectively, if I had to take a guess.
Camera wise, the Beyond X will come with as many as six lenses, with two on the front and four on the back. It’ll also apparently come with built-in 5G support and reverse wireless charging, a feature we saw first with Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro that lets you wirelessly charge another phone or a set of headphones by placing it on the back of the device. This feature’s still up in the air so don’t think anything’s set in stone just yet.
In addition, this phone will sit alongside three other devices Samsung will categorize under the Galaxy S10 brand, all shipping with screens ranging from 5.8-inches to 6.4-inches and between three to five cameras. You also can’t forget about Samsung’s foldable Galaxy F which will also be released next year and likely come with flagship specs.
All of this goes to say Samsung looks to introduce as many as six flagship phones next year so long as you include the three Galaxy S10s, Beyond X, Galaxy F, and presumed Galaxy Note 10. That’s a lot of flagships. There are rumors that one of the Galaxy S10 models may serve as a budget option, but since we’re still early in the process of this rumor mill, I wouldn’t expect much sizzle from these steaks.
Still, it’s interesting to hear about what Samsung might have in store for 2019. Rumor has it the company will unveil some of its newest flagships in mid February at an event so be sure to stay tuned for more information leading up to that timeframe.
