You Can Now Watch HDR Video from YouTube on the iPhone XS and XS Max

YouTube has begun rolling out an update to its iOS app that enables HDR video playback on Apple’s two new iPhones: the XS and XS Max. This comes roughly four months after the video service introducing HDR video playback for the iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus. According to reports, you’ll be able to watch up to 1080p HDR video on either XS model.

For those of you wondering, this doesn’t make the iPhone XS and XS Max a part of YouTube’s Signature Device program. That program ensures users that each device on the list supports the VP9 codec, therefore guaranteeing the highest quality video playback on YouTube. Apple, for whatever reason, wants to stick with its own codecs. So for the meantime, don’t expect any iPhones to hit the list whatsoever.
