Google has announced a new version of its Fit app for Android and Wear OS. The app is receiving a complete redesign with the company’s new Material Design 2 language onboard. It’s also getting new features that aim to help you lead a healthier lifestyle.
According to the company, the new version of Google Fit will include Move Minutes that help you track your activities throughout the day. They’ll be shown in an activity ring that appears in Fit’s home screen. Google says Move Minutes will help you keep tabs on how active you are during the day. For instance, taking the stairs instead of an elevator will get you more minutes each day and help you stay on top of your goals.
Meanwhile, Heart Points act as a sort of reward for performing activities. Google says users will get one point for each minute of moderate activity and two points for each minute of vigorous workouts. Fit will utilize your phone or watch’s sensors to keep track of your activities during the day and stay on top of your body stats such as your step count, heart rate, and more. The app will also use connections to other fitness apps like Strava, MyFitnessPal, Runkeepr, and more to give you credit for activities you perform outside of Fit in the form of extra Heart Points and Move Minutes.
With the latest version of Fit, Google is also announcing a collaboration with the American Heart Association and the World Health Organization to “understand the science behind physical activity and help you get the amount and intensity needed to improve your health.” For example, the AHA and WHO’s recommended amount of physical activity is about 30 minutes worth of a brisk walk five days a week. The company will use that information and help you reach a similar goal every day. Of course, it has an uphill battle what with major players such as Apple already winning in fitness, but hopefully, these features help those on the Android side get more out of their phones and wearables moving forward.
