Google Might Be Working on a Wireless Charging Dock for the Pixel 3

Google’s Pixel 3 and 3 XL are said to come with glass bodies, and it looks like the company will be taking full advantage of this.

According to new strings discovered in the latest version of the Google Android app by 9to5Google, Google might be working on an in-house wireless charging dock for the Pixel 3 that will allow you to prop your phone up as it charges over Qi or PMA technology. The battery stats may appear in Google’s At a Glance home screen widget, the always-on display, and/or even the lock screen. And apparently, there’s much more to this accessory than just charging.

9to5Google also notes the existence of certain strings that hint at special Assistant capabilities when you dock your Pixel in this special stand. As long as your phone identifies you’re using your own dock, Assistant will be able to read personal information like your calendar or reminders while your phone is locked. It isn’t clear how this technology will work or if this is a confirmed feature of the dock, but it is pretty well-hinted at within the Google app’s code, as seen below.

<string name=”trusted_dock_message”>Your Assistant can use your personal info to make suggestions, answer questions, and take actions for you when your phone is locked and on your Pixel Stand</string>

<string name=”trusted_dock_title”>Get personalized help when your phone is on your Pixel Stand</string>

In addition, the wireless charging dock will reportedly be called the Pixel Stand. It’ll likely debut at the same time the Pixel 3, new Pixelbook, and new Pixelbuds do in early October. We don’t have pricing or release information yet, but stay tuned.
