Microsoft has begun rolling out a redesigned version of its desktop Skype app that resembles the recently-introduced designs of the Windows 10 and mobile apps.
With the new design comes a few new features. Microsoft says users can now place free HD video and screen sharing calls with up to 24 contacts; utilize @mentions to get someone’s attention in a group chat; view shared media easier in a new media gallery; and share photos, videos, and other files up to 300MB in size by dragging and dropping them into a conversation. The company also has a list of features that’ll roll out in the future including read receipts, private conversations, native call recording, profile invites, and group links.
To ensure version 8.0 of Skype is as widely used as possible, Microsoft will force those still using the classic desktop app to upgrade to the latest version by September 1st. Otherwise, the app will no longer work. If you have problems updating, you can visit the company’s support site for help.
Skype 8.0 is available starting today for all Skype users.
