It was recently discovered with new software updates, older iPhones begin slowing down. According to Apple, it’s to prevent unexpected shutdowns due to older batteries not being able to supply CPUs with enough power to deliver peak performance. This news didn’t sit well with consumers which ultimately led to Apple adding battery health tools in the latest beta of iOS 11.3.
But as was originally noted, these tools mainly apply to the iPhone 7 and earlier since the iPhone 8 and X are still brand new. Apple hinted weeks ago that these handsets may get the same feature set as the iPhone 7 in terms of battery monitoring and performance control, but now, in response to a question asked by Senator John Thune, it doesn’t look that way anymore.
According to the company, Apple included “hardware updates that allow a more advanced performance management system that more precisely allows iOS to anticipate and avoid an unexpected shutdown” inside the iPhone 8 and X. This indicates the new iPhones might not ever need the same battery and performance controls as older models. In theory, they should retain their same performance from update to update.
That being said, Apple has stated the direct opposite of this in the past, so we really don’t know what their next move will be. I guess we’ll have to wait for iOS 12 to see where they go with this.
