Essential Phone to Get Upgrade to Android Oreo 8.1, Not 8.0

We’ve known for a while that Essential intends to upgrade its first smartphone, the Essential Phone, to Android Oreo in the near future thanks to the clean build of the OS onboard. For a hot minute, the update’s been in beta form carrying the version number 8.0. Despite providing testers with a slightly older version of the OS, the company is now stating they’ll release Android Oreo 8.1 instead when the update comes out for the public in the future.

Admittedly, with the change, the company has to push the release of Oreo for the Essential Phone back a couple of weeks. But all in all, it’ll likely be worth it to see even further improvements and optimizations for the device over opting for an operating system that’s, at this point, outdated.

Up until now, only the Google Pixel lineup has seen Android 8.1, so it’s interesting to see Essential being among the first to adopt the update. We currently don’t have a release date for it, but we’ll let you know when it begins getting pushed out.
