Samsung will announce the Galaxy S9 next month during MWC 2018, and it’s time for rumors to start flying everywhere. A newly leaked image (via Netnews, Android Authority) claims to display the retail packaging of the upcoming S9 which reveals various details about the handset.
Most notably, the new camera. Samsung will allegedly be using a new “Super Speed Dual Pixel” 12MP sensor with OIS and with something a bit out of the ordinary: two separate apertures. Normally, a single camera lens would result in having one set aperture for taking photos, but it looks like Samsung will be using a varying opening on its sensor for taking both bright and low-light photos. Apertures include f/1.5 and f/2.4, respectively. We saw this tech before in Samsung’s W2018 flip phone so it would make sense to see it trickle into the company’s flagship smartphone line.
We’ll also reportedly see “Super Slow-mo” mode on the S9. Rumor has it the upcoming phone will be able to shoot slow-motion videos in 1,000 frames per second. If this isn’t “Super Slow-mo” as mentioned in the image, I don’t know what is.
It looks like we may also be seeing stereo speakers tuned by AKG on the S9. Details remain slim as to how they’ll implement the feature, but my money is on using both the earpiece and bottom-firing speaker, similar to what Apple does with the iPhone. That way, Samsung can retain the same slim bezels from the S8. Otherwise, you’d have a forehead and chin like the Pixel 2 XL.
Also mentioned in the leaked image is a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display, an 8MP auto-focusing selfie camera, IP68 water and dust resistants, an iris scanner, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, wireless charging, and a free pair of AKG earphones. None of this is confirmed yet, but it all sounds pretty convincing. We’ll let you know if we learn anything more.
