Amazon has unveiled plans to introduce a new developers kit that will allow Alexa to come to devices such as headphones and wearables like smartwatches. We’ve seen voice assistants on these devices in the past (Bose, Apple, and Google come to mind), but it’s a rarity we find Alexa on them. Now, it looks like the feature could go mainstream.
With the new developers kit, OEMs won’t have to do very much work to get Alexa on their devices. In fact, Amazon does most of it for them. Basically, all you need is Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a microphone in your device for it to work with Alexa. This is due to integration with the assistant passing through the Alexa app on your phone. Therefore, as long as you have a strong wireless connection between your handset and whatever device you’re wearing, you’ll be good.
Amazon says some OEMs are already signed on and committed to delivering Alexa-enabled gadgets this year, including Bose, Jabra, iHome, and Bowers & Wilkins. It’s all in the push to get Alexa basically everywhere, and it looks like Amazon’s efforts are paying off. The developer kit should become available this year for everyone interested.
