Google today began rolling out Android 8.1 Oreo to Pixel and Nexus devices as a free upgrade. The update comes as the company also released Android Oreo (Go edition) based on Oreo 8.1 for lower-end devices.
While there isn’t a ton new in Oreo 8.1, there are some noteworthy changes. There are some UI tweaks here and there like more transparency in elements like the quick settings, while the burger and beer emoji have been corrected after some serious debate. Google is also enabling the Pixel Visual Core in the Pixel 2 and 2 XL that does all HDR image processing whether from Google’s own camera app or third-party solutions. Photos taken when the chip is enabled do tend to be processed about 20% faster, but you won’t notice a huge difference day-to-day.
Additionally, the December security patch for all Pixel and Nexus devices is also included in today’s update. There are two security levels present: 2017-12-01 and 2017-12-05. In total, there are 48 fixes between the two.
Also, an actual Oreo now sits as Android Oreo’s easter egg. Bout time.
Expect Android 8.1 to hit your Google-branded device in the very near future.
