James Cameron recently sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair who asked him about the upcoming Avatar sequels that were announced back in 2016. In the interview, Cameron commented about what the future of the films could behold and said if the first two sequels don’t make money, the fourth and fifth installments would simply be canceled.
“Let’s face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don’t make enough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5. They’re fully encapsulated stories in and of themselves. It builds across the five films to a greater kind of meta narrative, but they’re fully formed films in their own right, unlike, say, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where you really just had to sort of go, “Oh, shit, all right, well I guess I better come back next year.” Even though that all worked and everybody did.”
The good news is if these films do happen, the story should expand naturally. But if they get canceled, I guess we should all assume Avatar 3 will have a satisfying ending?
Look, I’m not entirely sure why Cameron is making so many more Avatar movies. Maybe it’s to get a bunch of press. Maybe he wants money. Any way you look at it, it’s a lot of films with a stupid long story.
In the interview, Cameron did hint fans of the original film will be fans of the sequels, while those who hated the first movie will likely hate the rest, too.
Basically, if you loved the first movie, you’re gonna love these movies, and if you hated it, you’re probably gonna hate these. If you loved it at the time, and you said later you hated it, you’re probably gonna love these.
But in the end, it’ll be up to fans of the first Avatar film to determine whether the world is deserving of a fourth and fifth installment after the first two land. We’ll let you know how that goes over time.
