Users of Apple’s iPhone X are beginning to face a pretty interesting issue pegging what happens to the new device when it’s out in the cold. According to this subreddit thread, when the X gets a bit too cold, the display locks up and can’t register any touch inputs. However, users report simply locking and unlocking their phones seems to resolve the issue. Users have also tried waiting until their iPhone became responsive which also seems to work most of the time. Therefore, it’s been determined that this problem is software-related.
In a statement to The Loop, Apple says they will be issuing a software fix for the X so this problem doesn’t affect more users.
“We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment. After several seconds the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update.”
As of now, it seems the iPhone X’s version of iOS doesn’t know how to handle things when the device’s hardware gets a bit too chilly. Of course, we don’t know this for certain, but it seems to be the most likely of culprits.
Apple does note on its support website what might happen to an iOS device when it gets too cold or hot, but it doesn’t mention anything about the screen locking up.
Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures.
For now, this issue will remain a mystery until Apple gives some clarification. Until then, we’ll have to sit tight and wait for the next software update for the iPhone X that will (hopefully) fix things.
