Google Assistant Can Now Recognize Songs

For whatever reason, Google Now has reigned supreme when compared to the new Google Assistant in one regard for quite some time: song recognition. Whereas the former can perform the function, the latter never gained the ability. However, it now appears this is changing as Google is now updating the Assistant with the ability to identify music playing around you simply by a user saying “what song is this?”. We received the update on a variety of devices including the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, and Moto Z2 Play.

As far as I know, the feature will only work when there’s music playing around you so it’s not like you can ask the Assistant what song’s playing in your headphones. Regardless, it’s nice to see the feature finally beginning to hit devices.

Meanwhile, the new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have had a similar feature where song recognition is always on. Once a song is identified, its title and artist are displayed on the always-on display. This feature is remaining exclusive to the Pixels for now, but at least other users can get a taste of what using the Assistant to identify songs is like.
