Google’s Pixel Visual Core, as announced to exist within each and every Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL for better HDR image processing, is now in beta thanks to the introduction of the first developer preview of Android 8.1 Oreo. The beta can be downloaded by anyone interested in testing it who owns a recent Pixel or Nexus device.
While the Pixel Visual Core is the clear flagship feature of Android 8.1, this first build also introduces the new Neural Networks API (NNAPI) which allows for on-device machine learning operations. There’s also improvements to the way notification sounds are played and tweaks made for low-RAM devices, AutoFill, fingerprints, and wallpaper apps.
If you own a Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, or Pixel C tablet, you can test drive Android 8.1 Oreo by flashing one of these images. We’ll let you know if we spot any additional changes in the first build.
