How-To: Get the Google Pixel 2’s Motion Photos and Face Retouching on Your Pixel

There’s APKs flying all over the place this morning as many have been able to extract them from Google’s latest smartphones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. And of course, the folks over at XDA-Developers were able to do the same and got a hold of the Google Camera app that will ship on the new devices, In the same breath, XDA was also able to port the APK over to last year’s Pixels and bring with it Face Retouching and Motion Photos.

By downloading and installing this APK on your Pixel or Pixel XL from last year, you’ll be able to utilize Motion Photos and Face Retouching without having to buy this year’s Pixels. If you’re unfamiliar, Motion Photos are Google’s alternative to Apple’s Live Photos in which they record around three seconds of video split between the point in time when you took a picture. Face Retouching is simply a processing improvement to make faces look more pleasing in photos.

While we don’t have a Pixel to try this device on, XDA says they’ve received reports that the hack does work. No root is needed for the APK to operate, and whoever has a 2016 Pixel should be able to run it. Unfortunately, you aren’t able to utilize Portrait Mode on the older Pixels due to specific hardware requirements fulfilled by the newer Pixels, but at least you have moving pictures and better-looking faces.
