Last Year’s Pixel and Pixel XL Will Get New Pixel Launcher with Android 8.1 Oreo

Google’s new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are bringing a lot of new to the table this year. There’s a new rear camera, new Google Assistant tricks, new designs, and even new technologies inside the devices. You’ll also find plenty of new in the software department, specifically the home screen. For the new Pixels, Google decided to redesign the Pixel Launcher from last year with some new features. And of course, die-heart Android users are craving the changes for their own device.

Luckily, it looks like if you have last year’s Pixel or Pixel XL, you’ll be getting the new home screen. A Reddit user (via FWNED) recently spoke to a Google support agent who said the redesigned Pixel Launcher would land for the company’s 2016 smartphones with the upgrade to Android 8.1 Oreo. No timetable for when this update would begin rolling out was given, but I would expect it to land relatively soon.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you’ll be forced to wait for Android 8.1 to hit your Pixel before you can get the new launcher. With the Pixel 2’s release right around the corner, I’m sure developers will get to work extracting all the software from the new devices and port the home screen to older phones. This is pretty inevitable so we’ll let you know when it happens.
