The Google Assistant is Gaining the Ability to Identify Songs

Google will soon update its Assistant with the ability to identify songs. As first spotted by Android Police, the feature will eventually make its way to all devices with the Assistant on board and be able to tell you what music is playing around you.

At this time, it looks like song identification will first land on Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Yesterday at the company’s event, Android Police asked the Assistant “what’s this song” while using the Pixel 2 XL and the AI voice bot was able to begin using the device’s microphones to hear what was playing. A new feature called Now Playing on the new Pixels will do this automatically and present the current song’s title and artist right on the always-on display. So naturally, it would make sense to bring the functionality to the Assistant so you can just ask your phone what song is playing. AP was later able to confirm the feature won’t stay exclusive to the Pixels and would eventually land for everyone else with Assistant on their phone.

Currently, there is no timetable for when we can expect to see song identification with the Assistant launch, but I’d imagine it would go live around the time the Pixel 2 and 2 XL launch which is October 19th.
