Google’s New Premium Home Speaker Aims to Compete with Apple’s HomePod

During their event today, Google took the wraps off its premium version of the Home smart speaker called the Google Home Max. It’s a clear shot at Apple’s HomePod as it’s a premium speaker with a voice assistant on board with an expensive price tag to match. But hey, I guess premium smart home speakers are a thing now?

The Google Home Max packs two 4.5-inch high-excursion woofers with custom tweeters for improved sound. There’s an acoustic brace and acoustically-designed fabric covering the device which is durable and comes in both Chalk and Charcoal finishes. A new feature called Smart Sound will automatically balance the Max’s sound output based on your surroundings and what type of audio you’re listening to (e.g. music, podcasts, news briefings). Additionally, the Google Assistant ships on board with far-field microphones for voice commands.

Additionally, the Home Max features auxiliary output to play audio through your own set of speakers, while Bluetooth connectivity between it and your smartphone to stream music is also here. It can be positioned either horizontally or vertically and ships in either Chalk or Charcoal. It will cost $399 when it goes up for pre-order November 13th. Included will be a 12-month subscription to YouTube Red which includes YouTube Music to stream all of your favorite songs. Note that you’ll need to be a new customer to the service in order to claim the offer.
