Today before IFA 2017 has had time to kick off, Samsung has unveiled its latest smartwatches which come in the forms of both a standard smartwatch with enhanced fitness features and a straight-up fitness band with convenient upgrades. Called the Gear Sport and Gear Fit 2 Pro respectively, these watches aim to offer better experiences to what Samsung has offered in the past.
Starting with the former, the Gear Sport is likely the most ideal option here for those of you looking for a new smartwatch as it has all the standard smartwatch functionality built-in. It comes with a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED 360×360 display surrounded by a rotating bezel for interacting with the watch’s UI, NFC for Samsung Pay, and Tizen OS which has its own suite of apps and services. The 20mm band is interchangeable with whatever band you can find in that size, while it’s rated at 5 ATM for tracking swimming at depths of up to 50 meters. There’s also a heart rate sensor, auto activity detection, custom goals and alerts for your wellness plan, and a free 12-month subscription to Under Armour’s fitness apps including UA Record, MyFitnessPal, MayMyRun, and Endomondo.
Additionally, there’s a 300mAh (four-day) battery for powering the Gear Sport alongside a dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.2, and a GPS for tracking your runs and activities.
As for the latter, the Gear Fit 2 Pro steps things up when compared to the previous Gear Fit 2. It also packs 5 ATM water resistance, the subscription to Under Armour’s services, a heart rate sensor, auto activity detection, and custom goals and alerts for your wellness plan much like the Gear Sport. But its specs tend to be pretty different in this case as we’re looking at a 1.5-inch curved rectangular Super AMOLED display and a unique band which isn’t as easy to change without buying an after-market option from Samsung themselves. There’s also 500MB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.2, 4GB of storage, and a four-day estimated operating time with “typical usage” thanks to the 200mAh battery onboard. All in all, while each wearable has their own unique factors, they do have plenty of differentiators at the same time.
In addition to the new smartwatches, Samsung is also refreshing its IconX wireless earbuds from last year with new colors and a long-lasting battery, now estimated to withstand 5 hours of streaming music and 6 hours of playing onboard music. The headphones also sport 4GB of room to store your tunes.
While we don’t have pricing or release information for the Gear Sport or IconX headphones, we do know the Gear Fit 2 Pro will cost $199 when it goes up for pre-order tomorrow at Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, Macys, and Samsung.com and goes on sale September 15th. We’ll follow up when we hear more regarding Samsung’s other wearables announced today.
