Amazon is rolling out a new software feature to its line of Alexa-powered Echo smart speakers that allows you to group multiple of them together and stream music simultaneously. For example, if you have three Echos upstairs and would like to play music from all of them at the same time, just put them under the group “upstairs” and say, “Alexa, play my music upstairs.” This will stream whatever tunes you’re craving via all three of your Echos upstairs. This works with the standard Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show.
To introduce the feature, Amazon is including Amazon Music, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and Pandora as the initial services supported. The company says they’ll integrate Spotify and SiriusXM “soon.” The feature is available in the US, UK, and Germany.
In addition, to make the feature more widespread across Alexa-powered devices, Amazon has introduced an SDK for developers to take advantage of which will allow users to group non-Echo devices together to stream music. It’s unclear how long we’ll have to wait until third-party Alexa speakers gain this functionality, but assuming developers jump on board right away with this feature, we probably don’t have much more time left.
