9to5Google has discovered hidden code within the latest update for the Google app on Android. The data references a mysterious new device codenamed “Bisto” that could ultimately rule out to be a pair of headphones. The publication notes there’s a line in the app’s code which reads the following:
<string name=”bisto_magic_pairing_assistant_prop_text”>”Your headphones have the Google Assistant. Ask it questions. Tell it to do things. It’s your own personal Google, always ready to help.”</string>
As you can see, this is a string which would display this message when you’re prompted to pair these headphones to your device: “Your headphones have the Google Assistant. Ask it questions. Tell it to do things. It’s your own personal Google, always ready to help.”
9to5Google goes on to note there’s a good chance there are physical buttons on these headphones, leading to speculation that they could feature an over-the-ear design rather a “bud” form factor. One of the buttons would be a dedicated Assistant prompt, while the second “top” button remains unclear in terms of its functionality. It could change the volume or something, but for now, we really have no idea.
We haven’t heard much in terms of Google-branded headphones for the general public, so it’s unclear when or if they’ll debut. Ideally, the company would unveil them during their Pixel 2/Chromebook/Google Home event this October, but for now, it remains hard to tell. We’ll obviously keep you posted.
