Apple’s first-generation Apple Watch is getting a warranty extension. As reported by both MacRumors and 9to5Mac, the company has sent an internal memo to support members to acknowledge an odd issue with the watch’s hardware in which the back plate can become detached. A diagnosis won’t need to take place on your watch to determine this is the issue as a simple visual of the device by a support member is all that’s required to receive a free repair. It’s worth noting you’ll want to mention a free repair during your conversation with a Genius.
Here’s a portion of Apple’s internal memo they’ve been sending.
Apple has determined that under certain conditions on some Apple Watch (1st generation) devices the back cover may separate from the watch case. Apple will service eligible devices free of charge. Apple will authorize coverage for three (3) years from the date of purchase.
I sure hope Apple uses better glue for their cars than they do for their watches. pic.twitter.com/JkIThwC5B7

For those wondering, all first-gen Apple Watches are covered, from the Sport and Watch to the Hermés and Edition (you know, if you happened to have spent over $10,000 on a fitness tracker). This isn’t the first time Apple has had to extend this warranty before either, as previous first-gen watches sometimes saw their batteries expand.
