Apple’s iPhone 8 is so anticipated, it’s hard to tell what’s true and what’s not. A new report out of KGI Securities by Ming-Chi Kuo throws the entire idea of a Touch ID sensor on Apple’s bezel-free smartphone up in the air, as the analyst states the company won’t integrate the sensor into the display like previously rumored. However, he later stated the phone won’t have the sensor whatsoever, leaving many readers scratching their heads.
This goes against various reports that indicated the iPhone 8 would feature either a sensor on the back or simply integrated into its bezel-free OLED display. Kuo doesn’t believe this, for reasons including:
(1) the full-screen design doesn’t work with existing capacitive fingerprint recognition, and (2) the scan-through ability of the under-display fingerprint solution still has technical challenges, including: (i) requirement for a more complex panel pixel design; (ii) disappointing scan-through of OLED panel despite it being thinner than LCD panel; and (iii) weakened scan-through performance due to overlayered panel module.
If any good is to come out of this, it’s that Kuo doesn’t further believe production of the phone will be delayed into late October. But this rumor still makes little sense as Apple has included a Touch ID sensor on every one of their phones since 2013, so it’ll be interesting to see exactly what the company has in store come September.
As for other specs, Kuo says the iPhone 8 will have the highest screen-to-body ratio of any phone, therefore beating the Galaxy S8. Kuo notes this is thanks to the “notch” at the top of the phone that’ll house features like the selfie camera and earpiece. There will also be a 3D sensing camera for facial recognition and improved selfie quality, 64GB of storage, embedded USB-C power delivery for faster charging speeds through a Lightning cable, improved stereo speakers, 3GB of RAM, and fewer color options than years past.
Furthermore, Kuo says the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will each receive refreshes this year with glass and aluminum bodies, 2 and 3GB of RAM respectively, and a baseline 64GB of storage alongside the same improved stereo speakers.
