HTC has released a video which gives us a look at what they have in store as far as Edge Sense features for their flagship smartphone the U11. If you recall, Edge Sense essentially lets you squeeze your phone to perform actions like launching the Google Assistant, camera, or flashlight thanks to pressure sensitive sensors sitting along the left and right sides of the phone. The feature’s a bit gimmicky, and I can’t say it’s left this stage with these new functions that are on their way.
In the video, HTC demonstrates how you’ll soon be able to zoom in on Google Maps and Photos via the U11’s Edge Sense while toggling between a monthly and weekly view within Calendar will only take a squeeze, but these features probably won’t change the way someone uses their phone. The same way dismissing alarms and pausing YouTube with a squeeze won’t alter someone’s universe. They’re just gimmicks you can show your friends, and that’s pretty much it.
The only real feature here is the way you can answer and end phone calls with Edge Sense. This function (no pun intended) makes sense over trying to tap the answer or end call button on your screen, so I could actually see myself using this feature. You know, if I had the guts to actually go out and buy a U11 which, by the way, I don’t have.
But hey, you might be excited. You may think squeezing your phone is the future. Hey, you may be right! Maybe Apple will implement the technology one day into the iPhone? Who really knows? For now, though, Edge Sense remains a distinction between HTC’s smartphone and leading competitors’ options that happens to also be a pretty silly gimmick.
