LG Extending All G6 Owners’ Warrenties to Two Years for Free

In an exclusive article by The Verge, LG has announced that they’re extending each and every G6 owners’ year-long warranty to two years. The new program, dubbed the LG G6 Second Year Promise, offers full coverage for your phone from potential malfunctions. It’s worth noting that this won’t cover accidents, however, so you won’t be able to get your screen replaced if you crack it 18 months down the line.

Rather, LG is extending the manufacturer’s warranty in this case. When asked why, Chang Ma, president of LG MobileComm USA, said that people aren’t upgrading their phones as often anymore and are holding onto their phones for more than a typical 12-month warranty plan. “We’ve always covered with a one-year warranty,” he says, “but [customers] are now using their phones for 24 months, so what about the 13 to 24 months? That’s how we developed this program.”

Anyone who already owns a G6 will receive this extended warranty courtesy of LG. You do need to register your phone on LG’s website to be eligible, however, and you’ll need to do this either 90 after you bought your G6 or 90 days after today’s announcement, depending on whether you have bought or still have to buy a G6. You’ll even get a replacement device within two business days of your filing a claim with LG.

Not many companies use 24-month warranties on smartphones here in the United States, so it’s nice to see LG kind of pave the way for more manufacturers to follow in their footsteps. LG has recognized what is necessary to build a good phone and offer even better customer service, their main reason for establishing this program. “As a manufacturer, we have to listen to the consumer and then reflect those concerns in our product design and quality measures,” says Ma.

Let’s hope this starts the trend of two-year warranties.
