Microsoft is now letting Windows 10 Insiders to beta test OneDrive Files On-Demand. The feature can be downloaded and installed through a OneDrive update that’ll run on top of Windows 10 build 16215, released a short time ago.

OneDrive Files On-Demand is essentially an evolved, refined, modern version of OneDrive placeholders originally released in Windows 8.1 before being scrapped from Windows 10. It allowed users to download the files they were using rather entire folders of content they may not ever touch on their PCs, therefore saving lots of potential wasted storage. This time around, there’s a better way of viewing which files you have downloaded to your PC, while the feature has been integrated into the core of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update due out this autumn.

With Files On-Demand, you can access all your files in the cloud without having to download them and use storage space on your device. All your files—even online-only files—can be seen in File Explorer and work just like every other file on your device. You’ll be able to open online-only files from within any desktop or Windows Store apps using the Windows file picker. And you’re covered in both your home and professional life since it works with your personal and work OneDrive, as well as your SharePoint Online team sites.
For those wondering, Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar stated today on Twitter that there won’t be any new Windows 10 builds to test today. Guess you’ll have to wait a little bit longer.
