Logitech Turned a Mouse Pad into a Wireless Charging Pad

Logitech has announced one of the most ingenious things you’ve probably ever heard. First of all, they’re introducing two new mice: the Logitech G903 and G703. They feature PW3366 sensors and Lightspeed technology for better precision, improved metal springs and exclusive mechanical pivot hinges, and grips for your palm, claw, and fingertips for better comfortability during use. But this isn’t the full story whatsoever. It’s how they charge is what’s interesting.

Logitech has built a mouse pad that wirelessly charges these mice constantly. The company says it took as long as four years of research and development to get this technology correct. They’re using a proprietary solution here, meaning you won’t be able to place your Qi-enabled smartphone or other device and watch it charge on your mouse pad. Rather, it’s simply here for the mice and the mice themselves.

But why a proprietary solution and not something that’s used universally like Qi? Logitech says they needed a technology that could stretch the full size of the mouse pad they were building the feature into. This way, users could charge their mouse regardless of which position their cursor was in. So naturally, they had to invent something, and they call it the Powerplay wireless charging system.

“For decades, we’ve pioneered development in wireless gaming, and our new POWERPLAY and LIGHTSPEED wireless technologies continue this commitment to wireless superiority,” said Ujesh Desai, vice president and general manager of Logitech G. “With POWERPLAY, LIGHTSPEED and our new G903 and G703 mice, you’ll get unbeatable precision, lag-free performance and infinite power, which gives gamers the highest-quality experience.”

I have to say, this system looks pretty killer. If you’ve ever fondled with a wireless mouse, you know changing and charging batteries can be a pain, especially if your mouse charges like this. But thanks to a pad-wide wireless charging system, your mouse will probably never run out of juice. You know, as long as you have the pad plugged in.

The Logitech Powerplay Wireless Charging System will retail for $99.99 at retailers this August. The Logitech G903 and G703 mice will go on sale this month for $149.99 and $99.99, respectively. These new mice and charging system currently support Windows systems. No word yet on whether Mac support will arrive.
