Google today announced that YouTube for Android is receiving a new design similar to that present in the YouTube app for iOS. There’s now a navigation bar at the bottom of the app for easier access to different sections of the app, while the previous floating action button has been replaced with dedicated shortcuts to functions like uploading videos and recording new ones at the top. A new Library tab lists all of your playlists and like videos, while tapping your profile picture in the top right-hand corner will bring up your channel settings and activity.
This new design, while seeming new today, has been in testing for months. In fact, it was first spotted all the way back in September (via Android Police) of last year. Now that the change has become official, YouTube now sits on the same list as other apps that have adopted the new bottom navigation bar which has, since it’s debut, become an official element of the material design language.
Not many people are seeing the new design as of today, but we’ve gotten the change on our LG V20 and Galaxy S8 here in the office. Google says all Android users can expect the design shortly.
