Smart Reply originally debuted in Google’s alternative email application Inbox. But today during I/O 2017, the company announced they’re bringing the same functionality to Gmail users. The feature will launch on Android, iOS, and the web today.
Google says Smart Reply uses machine learning “to give you better responses the more you use it.” So if your friend asks whether you wanna go out on Saturday or Sunday, Gmail will say something like, “I’m down for either” or “Saturday’s better for me.” Once you select your reply, it’ll automatically be loaded into a response to the thread you’re within waiting for you to hit send. Of course, you can also add to the response if Google’s doesn’t suffice.
Google has detailed how Smart Reply works in their Google Research Blog if you’re interested. English speakers will get the feature first, while those who use the Spanish language to get the same functionality in the coming weeks. Google will add more languages in the future.
