HTC’s next smartphone is coming May 16th, but we’re still pretty uncertain of a number of factors. For one, we still have yet to precisely hear what it’s official name will be. Luckily, good ol‘ leaker Evan Blass over at VentureBeat has released a report suggesting the upcoming squeezable smartphone will be called ‘HTC U 11.’ It’ll also come in five colors: white, black, blue, red, and silver.
The final retail branding for HTC’s upcoming flagship smartphone will be HTC U 11, VentureBeat has learned, in an effort to bridge past and present naming schemes. The information comes from an individual briefed on company plans, who also revealed that the 5.5-inch handset will ship in a total of five different color schemes.
So why ‘U 11?’ As VentureBeat notes, it signifies a successor to last year’s not-too-shabby HTC 10 while stays in the company’s new U series we saw at the beginning of the year with the U Ultra and U Play. It’s a pretty clever name while sounding a bit scattered, but I think it could be legit.
I’ve said it a lot in this article, so you may wonder what I mean by “squeezable.” Well, if you’ve followed recent rumors, you know that with this smartphone, HTC has built in sensors that detect certain types of pressures (in this case, squeezes). This can give you access to shortcuts, apps, and more from within the OS. It’s kind of like Samsung’s Edge features but more advanced.
It’s too early to say just exactly what the handset will be capable of, but it should have at least similar features to this.
We also expect flagship-level specifications in the ‘HTC U 11’, including a Snapdragon 835, 4 or 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 16MP camera, a 5.5-inch QHD display, a 3,000mAh battery, and Android 7.1 Nougat. Pricing hasn’t been leaked (yet) while release rumors have yet to appear as well, but at least we know we’ll hear more come May 16th.
