The Fate of the Furious Races Past Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Become #1 Worldwide Debut

Universal Studios had a pretty nice holiday weekend. They just celebrated the results of The Fate of the Furious‘ box office earnings which totaled $532.5 million worldwide. $100.2 million was made domestically, while in over 60 other markets the film earned $432.3 million. This beats Disney’s previous lead with 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens which earned $529 million during its opening weekend.

Universal has to thank China for these results. The country is responsible for bringing in a majority of the revenue ($190 million, to be exact). If you recall, The Force Awakens was delayed an official release in China during its opening period. But if it fell into Fate‘s case, we probably wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Rounding off today’s box office news, The Boss Baby and Beauty and the Beast each continued to dominate, earning $15.5 million and $13.6 million over this weekend respectively. Smurfs: The Lost Village finished things off, earning another $6.5 million for Sony.
