ZTE’s Hawkeye is Loaded with Mid-Range Specs and Android Nougat

Nearly two weeks ago, ZTE finally took the wraps off their crowd-sourced Hawkeye smartphone at CEs 2017 by launching a Kickstarter campaign. Backers who pledge $199 or more will receive a unit of the phone when it begins shipping later this year, with the actual retail price likely to be higher. However, at this time, we didn’t exactly know what specifications would come loaded inside the handset. But via a press release today, this information has finally been cleared up. And to little surprise, the Hawkeye is a mid-range smartphone.

Here’s rundown of the specifications.

  • 5.5-inch FHD display
  • Snapdragon 625 processor
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB storage
  • Dual 13MP and 12MP rear cameras w/ optical zoom, OIS
  • 8MP front camera
  • 3,000mAh battery with USB-C port and Quick Charge 2.0
  • Dual SIM slot for use with two SIMs or one SIM and a microSD card
  • The following cellular bands:
    • GSM bands: 850/1900/900/1800
    • UMTS/HSPA: 850/1900/AWS/2100
    • LTE bands: B2/B4/B5/B12(MFBI)/B7/B13/B66
  • Rear-mounted fingerprint sensor
  • HiFi audio
  • NFC
  • Android Nougat

As you can see, there’s not much to be excited about regarding the internals of the Hawkeye, but for $199, this is a pretty good value nevertheless. As aforementioned, the actual retail price will likely be higher than the Kickstarter cost, but at least you’re getting your money’s worth as of now.

In addition, Lixin Cheng, chairman and CEO of ZTE USA, released the following statement regarding the company’s focus on Hawkeye and how they believe they’re changing the game when it comes to developing smartphones..

“With Hawkeye, we are challenging the way devices are developed by integrating the consumer throughout the entire process and letting them decide what the end product will ultimately be,” said Lixin Cheng, chairman and CEO of ZTE USA. “After letting the consumer choose that as well as the name, we are continuing to crowdsource the phone by letting consumers choose the final color and material.”
