Report: Apple Wants to Produce Original TV Shows For Release in 2017

According to a new report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple will soon start production of original scripted TV shows they hope to deliver by the end of the year. Apple first planned to buy scripted series from outside producers, but now it appears they’ve stepped away from that. According to the leaked plans, Apple wants to produce their own original content, hoping for it to gain similar popularity to HBO’s Game of Thrones or Netflix’s House of Cards.

Apple is planning to build a significant new business in original television shows and movies, according to people familiar with the matter […] Executives at Apple have told people in Hollywood they hope to start offering original scripted content by the end of 2017.

The new content would be bundled with Apple Music, Apple’s $9.99 per month music subscription service. This could be a ploy to differentiate themselves from competitors such as Spotify or Tidal. However, according to The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s plan is not to compete with Netflix or Amazon in video streaming or original content.

Apple is planning to debut its own series by the end of this year. This is quite a short period to realize their plans. Apple does already have a scripted Dr. Dre series in the works, while they also picked up a spinoff of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke show, so obviously their intentions are strong. But with such little to go by at this point, it’s hard to say whether we’ll actually see this content arrive before the end of 2017.
