To kick off CES 2017, Lenovo today finally unveiled their next Miix-branded 2-in-1 named the Miix 720. This device comes as a successor to 2015’s 700 and is built to compete with the likes of the Microsoft Surface.
Getting started, the Miix 720 features a one-piece metal alloy design to keep the device thin (8.9mm) and light (1.72 lbs), while Lenovo’s unique watchband hinges are present to offer more precise positioning of the kickstand in the back.
Regarding the display, Lenovo has built a 12-inch 2880×1920 QHD screen which features a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass on top and 400 nits of brightness. If the company’s past devices are of any indication, you can expect this display to be pretty colorful and vivid, but possibly not the greatest panel on the market.
Inside, Lenovo is packing some serious heat, making it a plausible punch in the face against the competition. Buyers can choose up to a seventh-generation Intel Core i7 processor with Intel’s integrated 620 graphics, up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM, up to 1TB of PCIe-based solid state storage, and either Windows 10 Home or Pro with a bunch of Lenovo’s own and borrowed software onboard. You’ll also find a 41WHr battery that Lenovo says can last up to 8 hours on a charge, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 (unfortunately), a USB Type-C connector, a USB 3.0 port alongside a standard USB 2.0 port, a microSD card slot, a headphone jack, integrated Dolby stereo speakers, a 5MP rear camera with autofocus, a presumably low-quality 1MP webcam with Windows Hello capabilities, and a dual array of microphones for better voice pickup during video chats and interaction with Cortana.
Possibly the best part of buying the 720 over something like the Surface is the fact that it comes with a keyboard right in the box. What’s more, it also features a backlight for typing in poorly lit environments. There’s also a stylus called the Active Pen 2 that allows users to take advantage of Windows 10’s various drawing capabilities already available and coming in the Creators Update. This accessory also comes straight out of the box.
Price wise, the Miix 720 will start at $999.99 and become available this spring. Two color options are available: Champagne and Iron Gray. Those interested can also pick up the Active Pen 2 for $59.99 starting next month.
