Super Mario Run Has Surpassed 40M Downloads in Just 4 Days

The much-anticipated Super Mario Run game launched last week, marking the first real game from Nintendo in the iOS market. Nintendo and Apple announced today that the game has set a new App Store record, with more than 40 million downloads in just four days. The game continues to be ranked at #1 for Top Free and Top Grossing in the App Store.

Nintendo issued a statement announcing that Apple’s SVP Phil Schiller would announce the record download for the game and to congratulate them with their success.

In the game, players control Mario’s jumping through the stages as the character runs automatically. The game can be played with one hand; tap to jump onto platforms, avoid enemies and collect coins.

First players are allowed to play the first levels for free, then a one-time purchase of $9.99 can unlock all available content. The game offer 24 levels across six different themes worlds.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the famous video game designer, said, “I am delighted to deliver a new Mario game for mobile devices.” Nintendo has not confirmed how many of the 40 million downloads are actually paying customers.

The large number of downloads is not that surprising seeing that Apple has been heavily featuring the game in the App Store and on the Apple.com homepage.

Reception to the game has been mixed; whilst many enjoy the nostalgia, some were disappointed by how easy the game appears or felt that there wasn’t enough content to justify the $10 pricing. The game was also criticized for its over-zealous DRM policy — requiring a constant internet connection to play.

Regardless, it looks like the Mario craze won’t die soon, and hopefully not has fast as Pokémon GO.
