You Can Track Santa Claus on Christmas Eve with Google Assistant

Apple and Microsoft tend to load Siri and Cortana with easter eggs corresponding with occurring events such as upcoming keynotes, announcements, and holidays. And now that Google has the Assistant, it looks like it’s time for the world’s largest search engine to have some fun as well.

As discovered by multiple users, in the spirit of the holidays being so close (and yet so far away for many), Google has enabled the Assistant to allow users to track Santa Claus as he makes his way around the world on Christmas Eve delivering gifts to all the good boys and girls. This works by plugging into Google’s Santa Tracker application available for Android and on the web.

All you have to do is say, “Where’s Santa?” and the Assistant will tell you what the Big Fat Man with the Long White Beard is up to and where he’s currently located. If you ask the Assistant this question before Christmas Eve, it’ll tell you that he’s gearing up for his big adventure around the globe in the North Pole and to check back in on Christmas Eve. It’s worth mentioning that this function works across the board so both Pixel owners and Google Home users can track Santa using their voice.

For those using the Assistant in Allo, you can ask where Santa is, but it won’t give you a direct response. Instead, it’ll direct you to download the Santa Tracker app or visit It’s a rather unfortunate drawback from using the Assistant in the messaging application, but it may be changed by Christmas Eve. Who knows?

In addition, the Assistant can also have Santa himself tell you a joke by asking, “Tell me a Santa joke.” There’s a few clever ones even adults can chuckle to, so don’t think it’s just a bunch of cheesy puns and age 3+ “funnies.”

For those who don’t celebrate Christmas, Google didn’t forget about you. You can also ask the Assistant to spin a dreidel which will then result into an actual result from the Hanukkah top so players can follow along. This is good for those who don’t have a dreidel, but if you celebrate Hanukkah, I’d assume you have one anyway.

So far, these are the only holidays-themed easter eggs we can find in the Assistant, but if we find more, we’ll let you know. But in case I forget, let me send out my wishes now:

  • Merry Christmas
  • Happy Hanukkah
  • Happy Kwanzaa
  • Happy Boxing Day
  • Happy Omisoka
  • Happy Yule
  • Happy Saturnalia
  • Happy St. Lucia Day
