You Should Probably Hold Off From Upgrading to iOS 10

In case you missed it, Apple released their highly anticipated update iOS 10 today to the general public for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. And out of pure excitement, basically everyone with an iDevice decided to upgrade. However, around 15 minutes after the update went live, users began reporting that their devices were becoming temporarily bricked and required a connection through iTunes to get them working again.

Here’s a couple of examples of user’s iDevices soft bricking after attempting an upgrade to iOS 10.

As you can see, both users’ devices ran into the same issue. The only way to fix this bug is to connect your device to iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC and restore your device to a clean state. This will erase all of your data, by the way. So all in all, this is really unfortunate for those of you who like to upgrade as soon as new software drops.

The Verge happened to grab a statement from an Apple spokesperson who had this to say regarding the issue.

We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers.

So at least according to Apple, the bricking issue with iOS 10 seems to be fixed. But while this may be true to some extent, I still wouldn’t bother upgrading today. See, each time there’s a new software update (regardless of OS), you usually have to wait a day or two and see how the new upgrade responds to being on the public’s various devices. If you don’t see any sign of bricking or major issues with the operating system, you should be good to go. However, if the update in question is anything like the first day of iOS 10’s release, wait it out. Trust me, you’ll thank me later for this advice.

Of course, not everyone’s gonna listen to me. So if you’re a risk taker and tend to live life on the wild side a bit and wanna upgrade to iOS 10 today, at least back up your device to iTunes first. That way, you won’t lose any of your precious data if you do run into any problems during the installation process. But hey, that’s just my suggestion.
