With the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus launching this Friday, many are anticipating trying out its new features and capabilities, especially when it comes to the camera. As Apple’s said before, the new iPhones sport much improved 12MP sensors, with the Plus offering a dual-camera setup on the rear to deliver better photos and videos. While on stage, Phil Schiller showed off some pictures taken with the new sensors, however due to the projected screen the company was using to present the content, viewers weren’t greeted with the full quality of the images, therefore leading to the assumption that pictures taken and viewed directly on the new iPhones would be much better. And according to some new snapshots taken by both Sports Illustrated and ESPN, this assumption is likely pretty accurate.
Taking a slight step back for a second, both SI and ESPN were given an early unit of the iPhone 7 Plus which were then handed off to their photographers to take some snapshots with the dual-12MP camera sensor on the back of the phone at the Titans – Vikings football game and US Open, respectively. And to no surprise at all, the pictures look pretty stellar.

As you can see, the new 12MP dual-camera sensors found on the iPhone 7 Plus perform very well. Both photographers were very impressed with the system’s capabilities, with ESPN having said this about Landon Nordeman’s (the photographer at the sports news outlet) experience.
Working with the new two-camera system on the iPhone 7 Plus encouraged Nordeman to react instinctively and quickly to the moments he discovered around the grounds while looking like another fan. The autofocus and exposure performed exceedingly well in various lighting conditions — so that even with one hand, he could get the shot. Nordeman was able to execute his signature style — surprising moments from unique perspectives, using color and composition without distracting his subjects — in a fresh way by using the phone instead of a big camera lens and flash.
Of course, there’s no telling which photos did and/or didn’t take advantage of the new iPhone 7 Plus’ 2x – 10x optical/digital zoom system. However, it’s pretty clear that the new portrait mode which will arrive via a software update to deliver better bokeh in photos wasn’t in use by these two publications, therefore leading to the conclusion that consumers who purchase the iPhone 7 Plus right away can expect camera results very similar to these.
If you look closely at the photos, you’ll notice that some are a bit overblown while others are over sharpened. And while you can defend them all you want in every shape and form, there’s no denying that since each one of these photos was taken with plenty of natural light, colors and vibrancy are always gonna look great no matter what camera you use. Nevertheless, these pictures do look pretty great and will no doubt please the public in this department when the phone launches later this week.
