Today during IFA 2016, Huawei unveiled a new smartphone called the Nova. And if you can’t already tell, it looks just like the Nexus 6P…
For starters, the same black bar across the top of the Nova is the same found on the Nexus 6P. This bar contains the camera sensor and LED flash while also helps to transmit radio signals since the phone is made of aluminum. In addition, the same antenna lines at the top corners are also present, while the fingerprint sensor remains on the back of the phone alongside the official Huawei branding.
Spec wise, we’re looking at a 5-inch 1080p display on the front which is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor. Paired with that chipset is 3GB of RAM for multitasking, while 32GB of storage is present for storing all your content (you can also expand this storage via a microSD card). A 3025mAh battery is built into the phone for power, and since you’ve only got a 1080p screen, battery life should be pretty good.
As far as cameras go, we’re getting a 12MP sensor on the back with an 8MP front facing sensor. These cameras should perform decently enough to produce good looking images, at least in theory.
USB-C is used on the bottom of the Nova to charge your phone and transfer data back and forth, while EMUI 4.1 on top of Android Marshmallow is used to operate the device. This will likely steer potential buyers away since EMUI isn’t even even close to stock Android, however some may enjoy the experience, while others will likely suffer.
To accompany the release of the Nova, Huawei also launched an upgraded version of the handset called the Nova Plus. This handset doesn’t look a thing like its little brother, however it does share the same aluminum construction materials.
The Nova Plus includes a slightly bigger 5.5-inch 1080p display, the same Snapdragon 625 and 3GB of RAM, a 16MP rear camera, and a bigger 3340mAh battery. All in all, the Nova and Nova Plus are very similar in various ways, even though they don’t appear that way in person.
Rounding off Huawei’s latest announcements from IFA is a new tablet called the MediaPad M3. This baby actually resembles the Nexus 6P as well with a big bar across the top of the device appearing just like last year’s flagship Nexus and the newly announced Nova.
Inside this 8.4-inch tablet is a Huawei-built Kirin 950 processor, 4GB of RAM, an 8MP rear camera, another 8MP camera on the front, EMUI 4.1 on top of Android Marshmallow, and a 5100mAh battery. All in all, this tablet should perform pretty well, especially since Huawei is in so much control of it as they are with their own chipset and software.
Pricing for the Nova and Nova Plus will land at around $450 and $480, respectively. The MediaPad M3 will cost around the same. Germany, Austria, France, and Spain will first see the Nova and Nova Plus before over 50 other countries do, while the MediaPad M3 will hit lots of countries and territories other than the US like China, France, the UK, and Japan.
We’ll let you know if any new details about the devices discussed surfaces.
