Just three days ago, it was discovered that HTC was releasing a second iteration of their highly controversial One A9 handset. Called the One A9s, the device sports an even more similar design to Apple’s iPhone 6 family all the way down to the camera placement and the antenna band arrangement. And today, HTC has officially confirmed that the handset is real and it’s coming out.
However, it’s even worse than we thought…
See, the One A9s is supposed to be the successor to last year’s One A9. But according to the former’s specs, you’re actually better off buying last year’s model.
For starters, there’s a 5-inch 720p display over the One A9’s 5-inch 1080p display. Inside, you’ll find a MediaTek Helio P10 SoC which isn’t as good as the Snapdragon 615 chipset found in the standard A9, the same RAM and storage configurations as the A9 with 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM or 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM, and the same OS (Android 6.0 Marshmallow). The rear camera of the One A9s has been downgraded to a 13MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture over the standard A9’s 13MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture (and has been stripped of OIS), however the front camera on the A9s has actually be upgraded from 4MP on the A9 to 5MP. Whether this’ll make a difference or not is unknown, however don’t expect selfies to look all that great over the A9’s.
Another “upgrade” found in the A9s is in the battery department. The standard One A9 has a 2150mAh cell, while the One A9s features a 2300mAh cell. This’ll probably make a difference for the good in the A9s since the display’s been downgraded to a 720p panel, however I wouldn’t expect it to last you all day long nonetheless.
Putting these differences aside, there’s not much to identify the One A9s from the A9. Other than the camera rearrangement, removal of the front HTC logo, and decrease in the ear piece’s size, not much is different. Of course, you could say that these are two completely different phones since the A9s is actually thicker, heavier, taller, and wider, there supposed to live in the same family, but as it appears, this isn’t so.
Color options for the One A9s are as follows: Aqua Silver, Cast Iron, and Metal Gold. Pricing and availability hasn’t been unveiled yet, however I think we can bet that this phone won’t cost very much.
Will you be picking up the One A9s?
