In a new report by VentureBeat, Google has officially confirmed that they’ve discontinued their 2015 Chromebook Pixel 2. The laptop began running low in stock all over the world and was questioned to ever be restocked again, however Google has confirmed that no plans to begin manufacturing the laptop again are present.
“We’re committed to the Pixel program but we don’t have plans to restock the Pixel 2,” a Google spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email.
The Chromebook Pixel 2 was the last laptop Google ever made. What made it stand out in the crowd was it’s build, it’s touchscreen, and no doubt it’s price. The baseline Pixel 2 ran for a staggering $999 (I say staggering because this is a Chromebook we’re talking about and not something like a Mac or Windows machine). If you wanted to upgrade to something with better specs, you’d have to fork over an extra $300 for the Pixel LS. No one should ever have to pay around or over $1,000 for a Chromebook. Hence, the laptop’s now been discontinued.
If you’re currently in the market for something with the name “Pixel”, Google is still offering their Pixel C Android tablet that can be purchased alongside a keyboard to interact with the device similar to how you would a laptop. With a starting price of just $499 and Android Nougat’s multi-windows capabilities, the Pixel C may be an even better offering than the Chromebook Pixel ever was.
