Mac Rumors has reported that a number of iPad Pros (according to their users with both the 12.9-inch and 9.7-inch models) are beginning to brick after installing the recently released iOS 9.3.2 software update. “Error 56” seems to be the problem with the majority of these tablets, and if you’re not aware of what this error means, it basically is when your iDevice tells you to connect itself to iTunes whcih does nothing when performed.
Apple says that Error 56 is in fact a hardware issue, however since these users who are complaining now haven’t before, it’s unlikely that the iPad Pros themselves are to blame. Possible fixes include installing the latest version of iTunes, checking for issues with third-party security software, and attempting a restore twice. If none of that works, Apple wants you to contact their support team.
Plenty of tweets have been sent to Apple’s @AppleSupport Twitter account for help, however they haven’t responded to a single one.
A statement sent to iMore by Apple says that they’re looking into the issue reported by a few users:
We’re looking into a small number of reports that some iPad units are receiving an error when updating the software. Those unable to restore their device through iTunes should contact Apple support.
A re-release of iOS 9.3.2 might have to be issued to these devices affected by the bug. Otherwise, theres gonna be a lot of unhappy Apple customers…and fast.
This type of incident has happened before with Apple’s iOS updates. iPad 2 models were beginning to become bricked after updating to iOS 9.3, something that was met with much frustration as well. A fix was soon issued after that, however let’s just pray that this is the case with this new bug.
