SoundHound Adds “OK, Hound” Feature in Official App

SoundHound today launched a major update for their official song identifying app. This new version of the popular alternative to Shazam includes the company’s Houndify AI personal assistant to control one’s music, meaning by simply using “OK, Hound” to activate it, you can create, say, a Spotify or Apple Music playlist without ever using your fingers. You can also use the assistant to control the playback of your music in Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora amongst others.

Of course, since this app isn’t built into iOS or Android, you’ll first need to launch the SoundHound app to use it. This isn’t a huge deal, however it is a little inconvenient since Google Now and Siri can both be accessed using your voice without pushing any buttons. But since Houndify is so much more complex and capable when compared to either the former or latter, pushing something extra may be worth it.

Here’s some examples provided by SoundHound of what you can use the new hands free mode for:

To use hands-free, simply say: “OK Hound… what’s this song?” You can also do much more:

Say it and play it:

• “OK Hound, please play Hello by Adele”
• “OK Hound, play Katy Perry’s top video”

Add song to Spotify playlist:

• “OK Hound, please add One Day Like This to my Spotify Playlist”
• “OK Hound, add Dark Horse to my Spotify Playlist”

Deep dive in music knowledge:

• “OK Hound, what’s Taylor Swift’s latest song?”
• “OK Hound, how old is Paul McCartney?”
• “OK Hound, where was Fetty Wap born?”

For music identification or Sing/Hum recognition, say:

• “OK Hound, what’s this song?”
• “OK Hound, what’s this song that I’m humming?”

Plus, you can continue to access all of the great SoundHound features you know and love through the classic tap, swipe and type modes, too.

As you can see, controlling music isn’t the only thing you can do with these new hands-free controls. It’s really nice that SoundHound built these functions in since using your voice is a lot simpler compared to having to navigate between two apps all the time just to create that perfect playlist. In the future as this technology advances, more and more complexity will be added to Houndify and will one day probably be able to fly your private jet for you. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

You can download the newly updated version of SoundHound to your device through the Google Play Store and App Store now.
