Xiaomi Unveils Massive Mi Max Smartphone w/ 6.44-inch Display, 4850mAh Battery

Xiaomi, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has unveiled their latest handset called the Mi Max. Just by the name, you can tell that this is a big phone, however according to Xiaomi, it still fits pretty nicely in the pocket. But this mid-ranger may be too big for comfort as you’ll find out below…

For starters, the Mi Max features an absolutely massive 6.44-inch 1080p display. Let that sink in for a minute or two. That’s really big. That’s bigger than 2014’s Nexus 6, a phone with a 5.96-inch display that people though was massive. See what I mean by too big for comfort?

Other specs include either a Snapdragon 650 or Snapdragon 652 processor with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM respectively, a 16MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus (PDAF), a 5MP front camera for #themselfies, a fingerprint sensor on the back, and 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of storage which is expandable via microSD card.

Since this phone is so big, there’s bound to be some extra room inside it’s 7.5mm body, right? So what does Xiaomi do? They fill it up with battery. Like, a lot of battery. This Mi Max is sporting a huge 4,850mAh battery.

It’s true, Kevin.

Nice to see someone make a giant smartphone and do nothing but fill it up with battery (*cough* Apple…).

Software wise, we’re looking at a new version of Xiaomi’s MIUI (version 8 to be exact) skin on top of Android. This new software will make the company’s line of smartphones run more efficiently. As 9to5Google notes…

The new custom Android skin will come with features to make it more power efficient, like the ability to freeze apps in the background as well as suspending sync, updates and other background tasks. It can also stop apps from non-essential apps from starting up when you power on the phone, and has a new multi-tasking window. What’s more, it’s capable of detecting scam and fraud messages to keep users’ data more secure.

The Mi Max will be available in Silver, Gold, and Dark Gray when it launches. Here’s a rundown of the pricing for each model:

  • RMB 1499 ($230 USD) – 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, Snapdragon 650
  • RMB 1699 ($261 USD) – 3GB RAM + 64GB storage, Snapdragon 652
  • RMB 1999 ($307 USD) – 4GB RAM + 128GB storage, Snapdragon 652

It’s unclear yet whether Xiaomi will launch this phone in the U.S. or let it remain exclusive to Chine and other markets in that region. If the Mi Max does, however, make it to the States, count on MBEDDED to give you full coverage.
