Acer today announced a new, all-aluminum Chromebook called the Chromebook 14. This new laptop sports some pretty impressive specs for a $299 Chromebook including a 14-hour battery, which will no doubt be the shining star of this new addition to the Chrome OS hardware family.
Build wise, this Chromebook is obviously a MacBook Air lookalike with its all-aluminum body and sloped design, but that’s okay since this design is pretty popular amongst consumers while also being nice and portable alongside the perfect house for an operating system like Chrome OS.
Packed inside the new Chromebook 14 is a a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Celeron processor with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage with 100GB of free Google Drive storage just for buying, a full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display, a built-in 720p web cam, two USB 3.1 ports (a first for any Acer Chromebook), an HDMI port for output to say an external display, Bluetooth 4.2 (the latest generation), and 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi a/b/g/n. All of this for a price of $299.
And let’s not forget about that 14-hour battery. Acer claims that’s how much time you’ll have with a full charge loaded in their new Chromebook, however in real world use, you can probably expect at least 10-12 hours of battery which isn’t too shabby either. In fact, most budget laptops like this probably won’t get you even 8 hours of battery, so with a cell this big, customers are going to fall in love with their new Chromebooks, plus probably save a little on their electric bill since they won’t need to plug it in very often.
Preorders for the Chromebook 14 start today from Amazon for the $299 price mentioned above. Acer will also release a model with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 1336×768 display, however details about the launch date and retail price are unknown at this time.
What are your thoughts on the new Chromebook? Is this a good direction for Acer to be going in with more premium materials being used for building such cheap computers, or should they just stick with their ever-so-popular plastic builds? Let us know your opinion in the comments!
